The modernisation of the fishing jetty in Liopetri has resumed

After a long hiatus due to the cancellation of the contract with the previous contractor, the reconstruction of the Liopetri fishing pier near Ayia Napa has officially resumed.

Construction vehicles have returned to the coastal area where access roads and drainage works are already in full swing.

The cost of the current phase is €420,000 and is expected to be completed by early summer. This will create the conditions for life to return to the coast: fishermen will be able to moor their boats in the revitalised harbour and coastal restaurants will be able to open their doors to the first tourists of the season.

The next major step will be the completion of three modern piers, a key element of the renewed coastal infrastructure. The tender for this work has already been launched and the results will be announced on 9 May 2025. The budget for the second phase is around €2 million and construction is due to start in the autumn.

Local authorities are optimistic about the future. The Liopetri Municipality welcomed the resumption of the port renovation and expressed confidence that the coastal area will soon have a completely new look - modern, welcoming and vibrant.

We are convinced that this project will stimulate the economic and tourist revival of the whole area. The coast of Liopetri should once again resound with the voices of fishermen, the laughter of tourists and the flavours of Cypriot cuisine. And now this moment is closer than ever, - noted the representatives of the administration.

В Лиопетри возобновили модернизацию рыбацкой пристани

It should be recalled that in November 2024, the contract with the company responsible for the repair of the Liopetri fishing pier was cancelled.

The main reason was the constant delays in the construction works and the postponement of the delivery date of the object. It should be noted that the works for the improvement of the fishing pier in Liopetri started in September 2020. The foundation stone of the new port of Liopetri was laid by the then President of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades. At the ceremony, he stressed that the idea to modernise the port came from the late head of the Liopetri Municipal Council, Kyriakos Trisokkas. He stressed that the new port could change the life of the whole village.

It is worth noting that the project, which is due to be completed in March 2023, is currently only 38% complete. After receiving numerous complaints from local residents, the municipality of Liopetri and the government began to doubt whether the work would be completed at all. As a result, it was decided to terminate the contract and find a new contractor.

The restoration of the Liopetri riverbed is one of the largest fisheries projects in Cyprus. The main objective is to transform the jetty into a modern, safe and organised workplace for professional fishermen. According to the vision, the project includes the creation of:

  1. A bridge connecting the two banks of the Liopetri river;
  2. More than 130 platforms and new berths for the safe mooring of boats and launches;
  3. A perimeter cycle and pedestrian path;
  4. A fisheries training centre;
  5. A multi-purpose office building;
  6. Fishermen's service area;
  7. New car parking;
  8. A café-restaurant;
  9. A nature observatory;
  10. recreation room;
  11. a kiosk.

There are also plans to provide mooring and lifting facilities for boats and dinghies, as well as an outdoor catch sorting area and storage facilities.
