In mid-April 2026, a major renovation of Ledra Street—one of the busiest and most recognizable in the city—will begin in Nicosia. The first phase, costing €3.44 million, includes the renovation of the facades of 89 buildings. The work will last approximately 18 months.
The Mayor of Nicosia, Charalambos Prountzos, emphasized that the last modernization of this street took place more than 34 years ago. The new project is expected to preserve the historic appearance of the area while revitalizing its tourist and commercial potential.
What the major renovation includes
The work will include restoration of carved stone details and plaster, repair of balconies and metal railings, replacement of windows and doors, installation of new drainage systems, and removal of unnecessary wires from the facades. It is also planned to update signage in order to create a unified architectural style.
Special attention will be given to preserving authenticity: buildings on Ledra and Onasagorou represent different historical periods—from traditional urban houses and neoclassicism to modernism and contemporary structures.

Further stages and public participation
The second phase of the renovation will start in July 2026 and will cover another 51 buildings. The work will last about 12 months, and its budget will amount to €1.5 million. Later, a complete renewal of the street space is planned, and the authorities will hold a series of public consultations with residents and entrepreneurs to learn their opinions.
The project is being implemented with consideration for the interests of the local community in order to preserve the unique spirit of the area and make the historic street even more attractive for residents and tourists.
After the completion of the major renovation, the old town will gain a modern and well-maintained appearance while preserving the historic charm and atmosphere that make this district popular among tourists and local residents.
