Following extensive renovation work, a municipal swimming pool will open in Nicosia on 27 June.
This announcement was made by the city council on Friday, 20 June.
The restoration work included the complete modernisation of the complex: all of the pools were repaired and the outdoor areas and electromechanical systems were fully renovated to ensure the facility operates smoothly and safely.
A key stage of the renovation was the refurbishment of the Olympic pool. A new service building has been constructed next to it, and a photovoltaic system has been installed to reduce energy consumption and improve the facility's environmental sustainability.
Alongside the work already completed, the municipality intends to issue a tender in the near future for the reconstruction of the central building, which will house showers, changing rooms with disabled access, a medical room, a doping control area, and a gym.
The total cost of the project is estimated at €6.5 million. Most of this amount was allocated by the Cyprus Sports Organisation. The remaining funds were provided by the Ministry of Finance. It is important to note that the municipal swimming pool in Nicosia hosts around 80% of swimming and water polo competitions for athletes from the capital, and around 50% for athletes from other Cypriot cities.
The municipal swimming pool in Nicosia first opened in June 1989.
It is located in the Agios Andreas district, between the parliament, the Supreme Court, and the Ministry of Agriculture. Since 2019, the pool has been operating with occasional breaks. In 2020, it was decided to close the pool for renovation, as all of its equipment was outdated. Notably, the municipal council has decided to keep the cost of admission and season tickets at the 2021 level, making the pool more accessible, particularly in light of the current economic situation.
