Limassol Municipal Council intends to implement three major infrastructure initiatives aimed at modernising the urban environment and improving the quality of life of its citizens.
This was announced on Tuesday 15 April by the Mayor of the city, Yannis Armeftis.
In particular, there will be a major reconstruction of Anexartisias Street, the creation of two 20-kilometre greenways and the opening of 25 new parks in various parts of the city. Armeftis stressed that these projects will make Limassol an open, accessible, comfortable and green city for everyone.
The municipality is planning to launch tenders for these projects in the near future.
These initiatives are not just projects, they are the first steps towards the Limassol of the future. We have started with the basic but essential - cleanliness, repair of roads and pavements, open dialogue with residents. Now it's time to go further. The council's decision is a start, but we need will, determination and consistency to make it a reality," the mayor said.
Armeftis said that as part of the redevelopment of Limassol's main thoroughfare, pedestrian areas will be widened, recreational areas will be beautified and shaded by trees and shrubs, car traffic will be reduced, modern lighting will be installed, aesthetic renovations will be carried out and infrastructure for sustainable mobility will be created. The main objective is to transform the historic Anexartícias street into not only a shopping artery, but also a lively public space for strolling, meeting and cultural events.
In addition, two 20-kilometre circuits will soon connect different parts of Limassol, providing safe walking and cycling routes. Sports and walking areas will be created along the routes, around 10,000 new trees will be planted and recreational areas will be created. These routes are designed to connect Limassol into a single ecological space, convenient for everyone - from school children to the elderly.
Finally, all residential areas of the city will have modern parks with playgrounds, sports fields, shaded areas, places for cultural events, infrastructure for relaxation and socialising.
These spaces will become places of strength, where you can recharge your batteries, meet your neighbours and spend time with your family. We are investing in the public good so that every resident has a park within walking distance,' says Armeftis.
