The Cypriot Ministry of Transport, Communications and Public Works has announced an ambitious project to upgrade the port of Vasiliko in the Limassol area.
According to the ministry, it intends to invest €350 million in the expansion and modernisation of the port. The main aim of this initiative is to transform the port into a modern industrial facility capable of strengthening the country's economic potential and becoming a major transport hub in the region. Upon completion, the port will be taken over by the Cyprus Ports Authority (CPA).
To implement the first phase of this ambitious project, which is estimated to cost €85 million, Cyprus has already applied for a grant of €38.5 million under the European Union's Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) programme. This initiative supports projects related to the infrastructure of the trans-European transport network.
According to a release from the authority, the project includes:
- Construction of nine new berths with a total length of 2,355 metres to increase the capacity of the port.
- Construction of breakwaters that will provide reliable protection against storms and increase the safety of the port.
- Deepening the approach channel to accommodate larger vessels.
- Developing the surrounding area to improve logistics and infrastructure facilities.
- Environmental upgrades, including the introduction of technologies that meet strict EU standards.
Upon completion of all works, the Port of Vasiliko is expected to be able to accommodate up to 1,772 vessels per year, significantly increasing its importance in the region's transport network. The project will be implemented in several phases, allowing for an efficient allocation of investments and sustainable development of the port.
