In the Akrotiri area of Limassol, a large-scale marine aquarium and research center dedicated to the study of the Mediterranean marine ecosystem may be developed. The project is initiated by the municipality of Kourion, which is actively promoting the idea of creating a modern educational and scientific complex. The preliminary cost of the project is estimated at around 10 million euros.
The Limassol Chamber of Commerce and Industry reported on the construction plans. The project is considered one of the important steps in developing eco-tourism and scientific research in Cyprus. According to local authorities, the new center will be able to attract not only tourists but also international scientific organizations.
Land plot and cooperation with the British Bases
To implement the project, the municipality has already approached the administration of the British military bases in Cyprus with a request to lease a plot of about 16 thousand m2. This plot is located on the western side of Akrotiri, south of the chapel of Saint George, on territory belonging to the British base.
Mayor of Kourion Pantelis Georgiou stated that preliminary negotiations with representatives of the British bases have already taken place and were conducted in a constructive atmosphere. According to him, the discussion showed a positive attitude toward the initiative, although a number of administrative procedures must be completed for further progress of the project.
During the meeting, representatives of the British side suggested that the municipality submit a preliminary request to the Limassol District Local Government Organization. This will allow all municipal services and government agencies to review the project and determine the technical conditions that must be considered when conducting the future architectural competition.

Architectural competition and participation of scientists
The municipality of Kourion has already begun preparing the necessary documents for submission to the district administration. At the same time, the city leadership is informing licensing authorities about the upcoming project in order to speed up bureaucratic procedures.
According to the mayor, the project is highly complex and requires serious scientific preparation. That is why an international architectural competition with strict requirements for participants is planned. The development of the complex concept will be carried out with the participation of specialists from various fields, including ichthyologists, marine biologists, and ecologists.
This approach will make it possible to create not just a tourist facility, but a scientific center of global level, capable of studying the marine environment and conducting research in cooperation with universities and research institutes.
Center for studying the Mediterranean ecosystem
The future research center will engage in scientific programs related to the Mediterranean ecosystem and the marine environment in the Limassol Bay and Akrotiri Peninsula area. This region has unique natural features and is considered one of the important ecological areas of Cyprus.
Of particular importance are the underwater meadows of the marine plant Posidonia oceanica. These marine ecosystems play a key role in maintaining biodiversity and protecting the coastline. At the same time, the region faces a serious problem of coastal erosion, which is gradually destroying coastal areas. The creation of a scientific center will make it possible to conduct systematic research on these processes, develop environmental solutions, and participate in international programs for the protection of the marine environment.
New center of science and tourism in Cyprus
Municipal authorities hope that the future aquarium and research center will become an important point of attraction for researchers, students, and tourists. The complex may turn into an educational platform where visitors can learn about Mediterranean marine ecosystems and gain a deeper understanding of global ocean environmental issues.
In addition, the project will allow the municipality to participate in European scientific programs and grants, which usually require the presence of specialized research infrastructure. Initial contacts are already being made with scientific institutions in Cyprus and abroad for future cooperation.
In the long term, the authorities expect that the center will become a significant scientific and educational institution capable of implementing international research projects and strengthening Cyprus’s position as an important center for the study of Mediterranean marine ecology.
