Limassol Authorities Pledge to Resolve Traffic Problems in the Agios Athanasios Industrial Area

The Cyprus Ministry of Transport has announced its readiness to support concrete solutions aimed at easing traffic congestion in the Agios Athanasios industrial area in Limassol. This was stated by Alexis Vafeadis, Cyprus’s Minister of Transport, during a visit to the local Industrialists’ Association. According to him, the government views the traffic issue as a priority and is committed to providing the necessary state funding to implement infrastructure projects.

The minister emphasized that particular attention is being given to Limassol’s northern bypass road. The route, starting from the Evagoras Lanitis section, has already been designed, and a tender announcement is expected by the end of 2026. The remaining sections are planned to follow in the near future.

Funding and Government Plans

Vafeadis confirmed that project funding will be secured either through the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry or the Ministry of Finance. This approach is intended to ensure continuity of works and avoid delays. Against the backdrop of Limassol’s rapid development and growing business activity, these measures are seen as strategically important for the region’s economy.

The minister also addressed concerns raised by business owners about potential traffic congestion linked to the planned construction of a shopping mall near the industrial zone. According to assessments by the Department of Public Works, traffic levels are not expected to exceed current volumes. However, Vafeadis acknowledged that the existing situation is already far from comfortable and clearly requires improvement.

Business Perspective and an Additional Access Point

The President of the Limassol Industrialists’ Association, Vassos Dimitriadis, welcomed the cooperation with the state. He noted that, thanks to the intervention of the President of Cyprus and the relevant minister, progress has been made toward implementing a project for a second emergency entry and exit to the industrial zone. According to Dimitriadis, this is not only a matter of convenience but also one of safety for employees and visitors to the area.

He expressed hope that the Department of Public Works’ traffic projections would prove accurate and that the new access point would genuinely ease pressure on the existing road network and improve overall accessibility.

Background of the Industrial Area and Infrastructure Investment

The Agios Athanasios Industrial Area was established in 1978 and remains one of Limassol’s key industrial hubs. Today, around 140 companies from various sectors of the economy operate there. According to government data, more than €4 million has been invested in maintenance and infrastructure upgrades in the area since its creation. In 2025 alone, €315,000 was allocated for resurfacing several roads.

Previously, at the end of October, former Minister of Energy Giorgos Papanastasiou, who was later succeeded by former Health Minister Michalis Damianou, also assured that the state was working to resolve long-standing issues in the area to ensure its sustainable development.

Amid Limassol’s continued growth and increasing traffic volumes, authorities believe that a comprehensive approach—new roads, additional access points, and stable funding—will not only reduce congestion but also enhance safety and strengthen the attractiveness of one of Cyprus’s most important industrial zones.
