The first tender for the reconstruction of Acropolis and Alki squares, as well as the renovation of Ermou, Konstantinou Kalogera, Gladstonos, Louki Akrita and Orfeos streets, which are located in the city center, failed miserably.
The Larnaca municipality announced a re-tender the other day.
According to the mayor's office, during the original plan, only one bid was submitted, which was invalidated. The main problem turned out to be underestimation, so the local authorities were forced to cancel the original tender and announce a new one, increasing the budget by 450 thousand euros to 3.55 million euros.
Applications from interested contractors will be accepted until March 26, 2024. The results of the next tender are planned to be summarized by the beginning of June 2024. The start of important infrastructure projects is scheduled for the second half of 2024.
The project of modernization of the central squares of Larnaca was developed by the architectural firm AF Modinos and SA Vrahimis Architects and Engineers. The company was tasked with embodying the aesthetic, functional, and qualitative renovation of the area and ensuring the smooth and safe movement of pedestrians and vehicles. This project is expected to complete the modernization, beautification, and traffic management following the Urban Downtown Sustainable Mobility Plan. The two squares, together with the projects planned in the commercial center of Larnaca, claim to be new reference points for the city.
In terms of road reconstruction, the project was handled by Loucaides & Philippou Architects.
According to this project, the area will be widened with sidewalks, unified urban lighting with mast lights, benches, and flowerbeds will be installed, and new parking spaces will be created, even for electric cars. In addition, the drainage system will be modernized, utilities will be buried and a water feature will be installed with the placement of modern city equipment, including the section delineating the beginning of Ermu Street and the end of Kleanti Kaloger Street.
According to the Larnaca Municipality, a total of around €8 million + VAT will be spent on the modernization of the Acropolis and Alki squares, as well as the renovation of the streets adjacent to them. The work will last 18 months.
