Larnaca will soon undergo a radical transformation.
Thanks to financial support from the European Regional Development Fund, it has finally become possible to implement a number of major projects that will not only improve the standard of living of the area, but also the attractiveness of the city.
The municipality of Larnaca recently signed three contracts, which relate to the creation of a new Park of Artists, as well as the reconstruction of the Alki-Acropolis square and the former residence of the head of the police of the coastal city.
According to the municipality, all projects were researched by A. F. Modinos and SA Vrahimis Architects and Engineers.
In particular, the first project involves the construction of a Mediterranean Artists' Park in the coastal area of Skala. It will be connected to Piyale Paşa Street and adjacent to the new municipal parking lot in the area of the former Turkish Cypriot cinema.
The study undertaken concerns the consolidation and improvement of Turkish Cypriot land plots that have been leased to the municipality of Larnaca to create an open square space with paving, landscaping, lighting and the installation of urban equipment. In the new space, artists will have the opportunity to create and display art in the open air and host events of cultural interest. The study also includes the paving of Akdeniz, Seyhan, Bozdağ and Bozkurt streets. The construction of the Artists' Park will be co-financed by the European Union Fisheries Program. Work on the park will be completed by June 2023, - said the mayor of the city.
The second project concerns the reconstruction of the Akropolis and Alkis squares, which are located near Ermou, Konstantinos Kalogeras, Gladstonos, Lukas Akritas and Orpheas streets. The main goal of this project is an aesthetic, functional and high-quality renovation and unification of two historical squares, ensuring the smooth and safe movement of pedestrians and vehicles, as well as creating an infrastructure for people with disabilities. The project includes paving and landscaping areas, installing new lighting and modern urban equipment, as well as landscaping the territory. Work on it is expected to begin in June 2023.
Finally, the third and final contract signed concerns the provision of design consultant services for the restoration and reconstruction of the former residence of the head of the Larnaca police, which is an architectural monument.
A 2-storey building with a total area of 485 m2, located between Byzantios street and the green area, where the construction of the Salina Park is planned. According to the release, the building will be transformed into a "Center for Creative Interaction with Youth and Vulnerable Sections of the Population." The study for this project will be completed around mid-2022.
According to a written statement from the Larnaca Municipality, “all three new projects are part of a broader effort by the municipality to improve, improve the quality of life and promote sustainable and balanced development of the city's regions”.
