Larnaca Airport has once again confirmed its high status on the international stage.
At the annual general assembly of Airports Council International Europe (ACI Europe), held in Athens, the airport was presented with the highly coveted 'Highly Commended' award.
This recognition reflects the quality of service and sustainable growth demonstrated by the Cypriot hub. In its category, which includes airports handling 5 to 10 million passengers per year, Larnaca took second place, behind only Sofia International Airport, named after Vasil Levski.
Hermes Airports CEO Eleni Kalogirou emphasised that this achievement was made possible by the coordinated efforts of the entire team, and she expressed her confidence that the airport will continue to move forward and strengthen Larnaca's position as one of the region's leading aviation hubs.
Further confirmation of this success came in the latest ACI Europe Air Connectivity Report 2025, which ranked Larnaca and Paphos airports as the fastest-growing in Europe in terms of direct air connections. Compared to 2024, the number of direct flights has increased by an impressive 18%, reflecting growing interest in Cyprus as a transport and tourist destination.
In an even broader context, the island also performed exceptionally well: Cyprus ranked second in Europe in terms of growth in direct flights in 2025 compared to 2019, with an increase of 22%. In terms of total air traffic, including both direct and connecting flights, Cyprus ranked third in Europe, with a 8% increase compared to pre-pandemic levels.
These results highlight Cyprus's strategic importance in air transport, as well as the stable recovery and development of its infrastructure despite global challenges in recent years.
Larnaca Airport is the island's main air hub.
It handles both international and charter flights. Having formerly been a military airfield, passengers can now enjoy views of the magnificent Mediterranean coastline and the services and amenities of a modern, comfortable airport.
Although the airport complex is small, its modern technology and automated systems enable it to comfortably serve more than 5 million passengers a year. Following its recent renovation, Larnaca Airport now fully complies with EU standards for servicing all categories of aircraft.
The airport consists of a main 24-hour passenger terminal for international flights and a VIP terminal for private flights. Passengers can enjoy additional services including car rental, lounges, business rooms and priority security clearance.
