Large-scale urban improvement works have begun in Paralimni

The municipality of Paralimni-Deryneia has officially resumed two major urban regeneration projects aimed at the comprehensive reconstruction of the historic town centre. These involve the large-scale renovation of the central square and the surrounding urban core. These infrastructure initiatives were suspended for almost two years due to the loss of European funding. However, the projects have been given a new lease of life thanks to a complete overhaul of the concept: the municipality has applied for them to be included in a state co-financing programme for urban development.

Key elements of the new concept

The main goal of the new architectural concept is to highlight Paralimni's unique geographical and cultural identity by integrating its historical heritage with elements of modern urban planning. Developed by the architectural firms A.F. MODINOS & S.A. VRAHIMIS CHARTERED ARCHITECTS & ENGINEERS, the project aims to create a harmonious public space connecting the three churches — Agios Georgios, Agia Anna and Agios Dimitrios — and the coastline via a single visual and thematic axis.

The symbolic connection with the sea is emphasised by water features: fountains, decorative ponds, and lakes with flowing water create an effect of movement, bringing a sense of nature to the urban environment. The southern entrance to the square will preserve the panorama of monuments, while the northern entrance will be designed as an alleyway shaded by local flora and fauna.

The orange trees of St George's Garden will be preserved among the green areas, and new plantings will be added, including low-growing flowering shrubs and shady ornamental trees that are characteristic of the Famagusta area. The eastern part of the square will feature a lake adorned with aquatic flora, while the western part will boast interactive fountains that will be operational during the warmer months.

The project includes the creation of a spacious open area for public and cultural events with a capacity of up to 3,500 people, a covered shopping area, recreation areas, green paths, and a designated area for photo shoots, including weddings.

Urban core renewal: development without traffic restrictions

The project to renovate the centre of Paralimni has also been revised. Unlike the original version, the new concept does not involve closing the streets to traffic completely. Instead, it includes resurfacing roads, improving pavements, creating additional public areas and green spaces, and providing new parking spaces.

The municipality is focusing on developing sustainable urban mobility. The project includes cycle paths, extended pedestrian routes, and recreation areas to make the city more accessible and comfortable for all citizens.

Multi-storey car park: a solution for urban mobility

Alongside the main projects, a €6.7 million multi-storey car park is currently under construction in the city. The complex will have 296 parking spaces, 17 of which will be reserved for people with special needs and three for electric vehicles with charging stations. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

The Mayor of Paralimni-Deryneia, Yorgos Nikoletos, noted that implementing these projects is a strategic step towards creating a modern, green and welcoming city.

We are committed to creating a city that is comfortable for both living and tourism. These projects will make the center of Paralimni more functional, beautiful, and sustainable. This is an investment in the future—for our residents, tourists, and the next generation, the mayor noted.

He emphasised that the renovated square will become not only a new symbol of the city, but also a catalyst for tourism, cultural and commercial revival.

The centre of Paralimni is getting a new look. Our aim is for every resident and visitor to feel part of a lively, welcoming city. These projects are creating an inclusive urban environment where people, culture and nature are at the heart of things, Nikoletos concluded.
