The municipality of Paralimni-Deryneia has officially launched a program to upgrade tourist infrastructure in Protaras and other popular resort areas. According to Mayor Yorgos Nikoletos, the project aims to elevate the resorts, expand the tourist offerings, and enhance the comfort and modernity of holidays.
The program is already yielding results. In 2025, Protaras celebrated one of its most successful tourist seasons in decades, and the initial projects have significantly transformed the promenades and beaches.
The beaches have been modernized with new amenities for vacationers.
New shower cubicles with solar panels and a contactless payment system have appeared along the coast, helping to conserve water. More than 70 such stations will be installed on the beaches in the coming months, along with individual safe boxes for storing personal belongings. At the same time, a campaign to beautify the area is underway. All buildings on the beaches have been repainted, and old billboards have been dismantled.
Art and history in the open air
Special attention has been given to cultural development. The "Path of Art" project has been launched on the Protaras waterfront and includes a collection of sculptures by Cypriot artists. You can see works by Filippos Yapanis here, including "The Battle of Levkolle," "The Fig Tree of Protaras," and figures of a centaur and Poseidon. The collection will be expanded in the future to form an open-air museum.
Additionally, the municipality is investing in promoting historical and archaeological sites. The largest Neolithic settlement in the region, Nissia, which dates from 5200-3900 BC, was recently opened to visitors. Within walking distance of Fig Tree Bay, you can also visit a burial site from the Hellenistic and Roman periods.
A new form of tourism is emerging, offering activities ranging from diving to sports
A map of the best diving spots is being prepared to promote this type of tourism. The installation of underwater informational signs for professional and amateur divers is already under discussion. At the same time, work is underway to promote religious routes and cultural events. In 2025, Protaras will host a stage of the European Swimming Cup, and in 2026, the first 30-kilometer marathon will be held here.
Two major projects are in the works: a new promenade and a new marina
The main long-term focus is extending the coastal promenade. During the fourth phase, the promenade will extend almost 9 km from the Agios Nikolaos fishing port and the Paralimni new marina to the Kapparis area. The area will feature alleys, squares, recreational spaces, and shelters. The entire area will be landscaped. The fifth phase will connect Fig Tree Bay and Konnos Beach, creating one of the longest and most beautiful promenades in Cyprus.
Construction of the €100 million Paralimni marina is in its final stages. It will welcome its first yachts in the coming months. Designed for 300 berths, the complex will be an important factor in the growth of maritime tourism and will attract investors and property owners.
Protaras is becoming a center for investment and leisure.
Thanks to modern amenities, cultural projects, large-scale beach renovations, and new tourist routes, Protaras is one of the most attractive spots in Cyprus. Thanks to municipal investments and international branding experts, the region is entering a new level of tourism competition and becoming a flagship of Cypriot tourism.
