Quiet and picturesque Kornos, located within the municipality of Lefkara in the Larnaca district, may soon become one of the brightest examples of sustainable development and modernization in Cyprus.
Thanks to a series of ambitious projects initiated by local authorities, the area is already laying a solid foundation for its future.
The mayor of Lefkara, Sofoklis Sofokleous, stated that within the next two to three years, Kornos will be "radically transformed." He emphasized that true policy is measured not by promises but by concrete actions.
“Every statement must be implemented, and this is exactly what I strive for in all seven districts of our municipality,” the mayor noted.
A key milestone on the path to these transformations is the flagship sports center valued at €18 million, which has already been approved and is in the final preparation stages. Built with the support of the Cyprus Football Association (KOP), the center will become a crucial sports hub for the region. It will include:
- A stadium with a capacity of 1,500 spectators, serving as the home ground for the Cyprus youth national team;
- Three training fields;
- A modern dormitory for athletes;
- A synthetic turf field for children's competitions;
- The new KOP headquarters and associated infrastructure.
Construction of the sports center is set to begin in early 2026, with completion planned for 2028. The official project presentation will take place on June 19.
At the same time, a second significant project is underway in the municipality — a multifunctional center costing €2 million.
Construction has already started, with plans to complete it within three years. This center will become an important public space featuring:
- Conference halls,
- An event hall,
- Convenient parking facilities.
Sofokleous stressed that, until now, the area lacked any suitable venues for events organized by educational institutions, community groups, or the municipality itself.
But the updates don’t stop there. Planned initiatives include:
- Creation of a Citizen Service Center, following meetings with the Minister of Transport and the head of postal services;
- Construction of two public parks, currently underway;
- Preservation and revival of traditional crafts.
The municipality is negotiating the purchase of a historic building where Kornos women once made items from red clay. The site is planned to be transformed into an interactive museum and workshop offering experimental pottery seminars for tourists, students, and all interested parties.
“This has been a long-standing request from locals concerned that ancient traditions and crafts are disappearing without adequate support,” the mayor said.
Finally, municipal authorities, together with representatives of Larnaca, have revived the proposal to establish a technical school in Kornos — a project previously announced by former President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides. Confirmation of its implementation is expected soon.
Kornos is gradually transforming from a traditional village into a modern, functional, and culturally significant space while preserving its authenticity. Thanks to significant investments, the area is ready not only for growth but also to become a true model of balanced development in Cyprus.
