Work on the construction of a new School of Marine Sciences, Technology, and Sustainable Development has begun in Larnaca.
This was announced on Monday, January 15, by the mayor of the coastal city Andreas Viras.
According to the release, a new state-of-the-art building will be erected in the Mackenzie neighborhood for the institution's needs. The school will open its doors in 2027. At the initial stage, it will open two master's programs: in Marine Technology and Marine Biology. There are also plans to create two more faculties in the future:
- Marine Science and Technology with one bachelor's and two master's programs; and
- Sustainable Development with one bachelor's and one master's program.
It should be noted that the new institution will be supervised by Cyprus University of Technology. By the way, recently the management of the university announced the successful completion of a study that describes the potential of establishing a School of Marine Science, Technology and Sustainable Development in Larnaca. According to Cyprus University of Technology Rector - Panayiotis Zaphiris, the project will enhance Cyprus' academic potential in the field of marine research and will contribute to the development of technology and the sustainable development of the country.
Zaphiris stressed that there is an urgent need for such an educational institution in Cyprus, as the existing curricula are designed for the financial and commercial aspects of shipping. And there are no educational institutions that graduate marine biologists or offer engineering and technology specialties in the field of shipping. By the way, applicants who want to be educated in these fields have to go to Greece to study. With the advent of the School of Marine Science, Technology, and Sustainable Development in Larnaca, this problem will be solved.
