The Municipality of Limassol has begun the temporary acceptance procedure for the renovated Heroes' Square and the surrounding streets. The main construction work has already been completed, and technical services are carrying out a final inspection before the project is officially commissioned. The renovation cost approximately €4 million. Funding was provided by the Municipality of Limassol and the European Union through the THALEIA 2021–2027 program.
What Has Changed in Heroes' Square
Following the renovation, the square has become more open and pedestrian-friendly. Steps and changes in elevation have been removed, making the area more accessible to people with limited mobility. New recreational areas, landscaped spaces, and venues for cultural and community events have been added. Pedestrian zones near cafés and restaurants have been expanded, while four adjacent streets have been partially converted into pedestrian-only areas. Environmental solutions also became an important part of the project. A special system will collect and treat rainwater, which will then be used to irrigate the greenery.
A Cultural Space Is Being Created Beneath the Memorial
The central feature of the square remains the monument dedicated to the heroes of the Cypriot national liberation struggle against British colonial rule between 1955 and 1959. An underground level is currently being developed beneath the memorial and is expected to host cultural events in the future. Some work in this area, as well as in the public sanitary facilities, is still ongoing. Limassol Mayor Yiannis Armeftis noted that the renovated square is intended to become an important public space in the city center — a place for meetings, recreation, cultural events, and everyday community life.
The Square Is Already Open to Residents and Tourists
Despite some remaining work, Heroes' Square is already open to visitors, while nearby cafés and entertainment venues continue to operate as usual. The renovation forms part of a broader redevelopment of central Limassol. The main objective of the project is to make the city's historic district more attractive to residents, businesses, and tourists, improve pedestrian infrastructure, and create more public spaces.
