From Botanical Gardens to Digital Infrastructure: What’s Being Built in Larnaca Right Now

The Ministry of Finance has announced that a range of infrastructure and social projects are currently underway in Larnaca, with a total investment exceeding €64 million.

These initiatives are part of the European investment program Thalia 2021–2027, which aims to support sustainable development and urban modernization across Cyprus.

According to Anti Philippidou, Director of Cohesion Policy and Financial Planning at the Ministry of Finance of Cyprus, the program spans seven years and has a total budget of €1.8 billion. Nearly €970 million of this is funded by the European Union, with the remainder covered by the national budget. The program’s main goal is to stimulate regional development, improve residents' quality of life, and promote the principles of sustainability.

The largest project underway in Larnaca under the Thalia 2021–2027 program is the construction of a technical school for “green” professions in Aradippou.

This initiative has been allocated €39 million, with completion expected by January 2028. The school will train specialists in environmental sciences, sustainable technologies, and natural resource management. It aims to bridge the gap in secondary technical education and equip young people with in-demand modern skills for the job market.

Other notable projects include:

  1. Reconstruction of Pattichion Park, with a budget of around €6.6 million. Completion is expected by December of this year. The upgraded park will feature new greenery, a botanical garden, a playground, a café-restaurant, an open-air stage, and areas for active recreation.
  2. Urban improvements in the city center, including the well-known Zouhouri Square. With a total budget of €11.4 million, the project involves upgrading sidewalks, roads, street lighting, electronic information boards, road signage, and the drainage system. The works are scheduled to be completed by October 2026.
  3. Development of a multifunctional park in the Tsakkilero district, costing €2.3 million and set to open in September. The park will include walking and sports areas, a children’s playground, pedestrian and cycling paths, a dog park, and a small open-air amphitheater.
  4. Renovation of Acropolis and Alki Squares and surrounding streets, with a budget of €4.6 million. The project, due for completion in April 2026, aims to enhance urban infrastructure and the visual appeal of central Larnaca.
  5. Construction of a new municipal nursing home, nearing completion. With a €6 million investment, the facility is expected to open in December. It will include 22 double rooms and 4 single rooms, along with medical care areas, recreation spaces, dining facilities, and staff quarters. The center is designed to meet modern standards of elderly care and will provide comfortable living for 48 residents.

All these projects are focused on improving the quality of life for Larnaca’s residents, creating a modern and eco-friendly urban environment, and developing socially important infrastructure.
