The Larnaca District Local Government Organisation (EOA) has announced a tender for a comprehensive study and the design of flood protection infrastructure for residential areas of Larnaca and Aradippou.
The total value of the contract is €300,000 excluding VAT. Funding will come from national resources, and the work is expected to take 12 months from the date the contract is signed. The project concerns areas located near the Kalo Chorio River. Once the study is completed, the Larnaca EOA plans to obtain a complete technical basis for launching a subsequent construction tender and carrying out the necessary works.
Project details
The work will include not only an analysis of the existing situation, but also the full design of a future stormwater protection system. In particular, specialists will carry out hydrological and hydraulic analyses and use modern digital tools and geographic information systems (GIS). Based on these studies, an integrated rainwater and stormwater collection network will be designed.
In addition, the necessary technical, economic and environmental studies will be prepared, along with the documentation required for the subsequent construction of flood protection infrastructure. The project therefore involves more than just local repairs to existing infrastructure — it is intended as a broader review of the stormwater management system in residential areas.

Problem areas
The need for the new study is linked to previous flooding incidents recorded in the Larnaca district, particularly in the residential areas of Vergina and Kamares. Past floods showed that existing hydrological and hydraulic calculations need to be reassessed to take account of current conditions and the future development of these areas.
The Larnaca EOA stresses that the new designs must take into account not only current but also future needs. This is particularly important for rapidly developing urban areas, where an increase in built-up surfaces can place additional pressure on rainwater drainage systems.
What happens after the study is completed
After the 12-month study is completed, the Larnaca EOA expects to have a technically prepared and comprehensive project that will allow it to move to the next stage — the construction of the necessary flood protection infrastructure. The project forms part of the Larnaca EOA’s broader programme to improve the safety and resilience of the city and the wider district. The main goal is to reduce risks to residents, property and urban infrastructure and provide more effective protection for Larnaca against the consequences of heavy rainfall and flooding. The tender announced at this stage concerns only the study and design work. The €300,000 represents the budget for this contract, not the cost of the future construction of flood protection infrastructure.
