Fishing Port in Kato Pyrgos Set for Modernization

The remote Tillyria region in northwestern Cyprus is preparing for a major infrastructure upgrade. The Department of Public Works has officially announced a tender for the modernization of the fishing harbour in Kato Pyrgos.

With a project value exceeding €6 million, the main objective is to transform the existing fishing shelter into a modern maritime facility capable of serving not only professional fishermen but also owners of recreational boats, yachts, and tourist vessels. For Kato Pyrgos, which has long remained one of the most isolated communities in the Republic of Cyprus, the project could represent a significant economic breakthrough.

Why the Project Matters for the Entire Region

Tillyria has traditionally been considered one of the island’s most picturesque yet most inaccessible regions. Despite its unique natural beauty, pristine beaches, and proximity to protected areas, the region has long struggled to attract investment and tourism.

Following the opening of improved road connections through the Astromeritis area and the gradual enhancement of transport infrastructure, authorities have begun paying greater attention to coastal development. The harbour modernization is viewed as the next stage in a long-term strategy to revitalize the local economy. The new port is expected to attract more yacht owners and marine tourism enthusiasts, creating additional opportunities for local businesses, restaurants, hotels, and service providers.

What Will Change After the Harbour Reconstruction

The project includes a near-complete upgrade of the existing port facilities. One of the key objectives is the strengthening and extension of the main breakwater, which will protect the harbour basin from strong northwesterly waves, particularly during the winter months. Large-scale dredging works are also planned. This will increase the harbour depth and allow larger vessels to enter and dock.

Older structures will be replaced with modern concrete quays equipped with new mooring infrastructure for safer berthing. Particular attention will be given to the environmental aspects of the project. The harbour will feature systems for collecting waste oil and vessel-generated waste, as well as modern firefighting equipment. Engineers emphasize that the design has taken the characteristics of the Tillyria Bay ecosystem into account, ensuring that construction solutions minimize environmental impact.

Funding and Project Timeline

The estimated value of the contract is €6,121,200 excluding VAT. Funding will be provided through state resources, although authorities have not ruled out securing additional support from European funds related to fisheries, the blue economy, and aquaculture development.

The submission period for construction companies will remain open until July 17. The winning bidder will be selected based on a combination of pricing and technical capabilities. If the procedure proceeds without delays or legal challenges, the contract is expected to be signed in November 2026. Construction is estimated to take 24 months, meaning the project is expected to be completed around 2028.

New Jobs and Tourism Development

The economic impact of the harbour modernization could extend far beyond the renewal of port infrastructure. During the construction phase, the project will create dozens of jobs for specialists across various trades. Once completed, authorities expect increased tourist traffic and greater business activity throughout the region.

In recent years, marine tourism has become one of the fastest-growing sectors of the Cypriot economy. An increasing number of yacht owners are choosing the island as a destination for leisure and vessel berthing, while demand for modern marinas and smaller harbours continues to rise. Kato Pyrgos has the potential to become a new destination for travelers seeking less crowded and more authentic parts of Cyprus.

For the residents of Tillyria, the construction of the upgraded harbour carries not only economic significance but also symbolic importance. For many years, the region remained on the periphery of major government projects, receiving less investment than Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, and Paphos. Authorities are now demonstrating a commitment to supporting the development of remote areas and creating new opportunities for growth. If completed on schedule, Kato Pyrgos will gain modern maritime infrastructure capable of serving as a key driver of development for Cyprus’s entire northwestern coastline for decades to come.
