The Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Public Works of Cyprus has announced a tender for the construction of a Special Security Center in Vasilikos. Interested parties may submit applications to participate in the tender until October 31, 2025. The project is being implemented due to the area's strategic importance as it is home to the country's main energy facilities, including liquefied gas terminals, oil storage facilities, and a power plant.
What will the center include?
A two-story building with a total area of at least 700 m² is planned. It will be located in the village of Mari. The center will operate around the clock in shifts with a permanent police presence. The project also includes a 12-year maintenance program that highlights the government's long-term investment in security infrastructure.
Tender conditions and financing
The tender process will be open, and the winner will be the participant offering the best value for money. The project budget is estimated at €2.7 million (excluding VAT), which is fully funded by the Cypriot national budget. Construction and engineering work is scheduled to take 18 months. Construction is scheduled to begin in February 2026.
Cyprus's energy infrastructure is under enhanced protection
The Vasilikos area is a key hub for Cyprus's energy security. Large-scale energy projects, including the future operation of a liquefied natural gas terminal, are being rolled out here. This terminal will play an important role in the island's energy independence and sustainability. The establishment of the Special Security Center is a significant step toward strengthening the protection of critical infrastructure, particularly in light of mounting geopolitical and climate risks in the Eastern Mediterranean.
