Deposits in Cyprus Reach Record High

In March 2026, bank deposits in Cyprus reached a record level of €57.8 billion. According to the Central Bank of Cyprus, deposit volumes increased by €426.8 million over the month. On an annual basis, growth reached 5.6%, compared to 4.7% in February. This indicates that savings are growing faster than the country’s overall economy. Compared to March 2025, deposits increased by €1.92 billion, confirming a steady trend of accumulation by both households and businesses.

One of the key features of the Cypriot banking system remains its high level of liquidity. It currently stands at 319% — the highest among eurozone countries. Experts attribute this to several factors. Firstly, Cyprus has a traditionally strong savings culture. Secondly, residents and companies have limited access to alternative investment instruments. As a result, money is more likely to remain in bank accounts rather than being directed into the stock market or other assets.

How Deposits Are Distributed Between Households and Businesses

Looking at the structure of deposits for March, the main growth came from Cyprus residents, whose deposits increased by €344.1 million. At the same time, household deposits unexpectedly declined by €138.1 million over the month. Meanwhile, corporate funds grew by €158.3 million, and other domestic sectors added another €323.9 million.

Despite the monthly decline, the total volume of household deposits remains at a record high of €30.12 billion. Businesses have also accumulated a significant level of liquidity: by the end of March, companies held €12.26 billion in their accounts.

Financial analysts note that the overall increase in deposits does not necessarily reflect an even distribution of funds among the population. Detailed statistics on deposit sizes are not published, leaving the level of wealth concentration unclear.

Loans Are Growing Faster Than the Economy

Alongside the growth in deposits, lending is also accelerating. In March, the total volume of loans increased by €528.1 million, compared to €326.2 million in February. The annual growth rate of lending reached 12.6%, up from 12.3% the previous month. This is significantly higher than the pace of economic growth and may indicate increased business activity and demand for financing. The total volume of loans at the end of March stood at €27.9 billion.

Who Is Taking Out Loans in Cyprus

The main borrowers remain residents of the country. Their debt increased by €72.3 million. Loans to households rose by €52.3 million, while business lending increased by €37.3 million. At the same time, other sectors recorded a decline in lending of €17.3 million, indicating a redistribution of financial flows within the economy.

The current situation shows that the banking system in Cyprus is in a state of high liquidity. On the one hand, this makes it resilient to external shocks. On the other hand, it highlights the limited development of investment opportunities within the country.

The growth in lending may support economic activity; however, the rapid pace of loan expansion requires caution from regulators. Within the eurozone, such trends are closely monitored to prevent market overheating.

In the coming years, much will depend on whether Cyprus can introduce new investment instruments and channel accumulated funds into economic development, rather than keeping them primarily in bank deposits.
