Paphos will have the largest and most modern nursing home in Cyprus.
The town's mayor, Thedonas Thedonos, announced this during an event to support the local social welfare organisation on Thursday, May 8.
The event happened at the Attikon Cultural Centre, which is in the centre of Paphos. The mayor said that creating modern places to look after elderly people is an important step because the population is getting older very quickly.
Our aim is to promote an initiative that will be funded in a way that can last and receive the right amount of attention from the state. The new centre will be a place for elderly people to live, but also a place where they can receive care, feel comfortable and be active," said Fedonos.
The Mayor of Paphos said that the project includes building a four-storey building with 100 rooms, each with a 27-square-metre bathroom. The nursing home will also have large shared areas, such as a kitchen, living room and lounges for activities and relaxation. We will make sure that the lives of older people are good. To this end, a big garden with tall trees will be created next to the building. There will also be computer classes and areas where people can do intellectual activities.
The centre will also offer dance lessons, sports and art therapy. Fedonos said that the new facility will include special vehicles and a team of home care staff ready to help elderly people who want to stay in their flats.
The Paphos mayor said that supporting the elderly should be a top priority for the whole country, and not just something that local authorities or organisations should do on their own. He also mentioned the Zeta Emilianida Social Assistance Centre as an example of a programme that has worked well.
We can't have a strong community if we don't take responsibility for each other. We are proud that the local government supports volunteering and charity work.
