Cyprus Launches the CY-Alert Emergency Notification System

A new state emergency alert system, CY-Alert, will become operational in Cyprus on 2 June. The platform will enable authorities to instantly send warnings and instructions to the public in the event of emergencies. The new system will form part of the country's civil protection infrastructure and will allow residents and tourists to be rapidly informed about natural disasters, wildfires, military threats, and other dangerous situations.

According to the Cyprus Civil Defence Force, the system will operate in test mode during its first weeks to allow residents to check their device settings and become familiar with the new notification format.

What Messages Will Residents of Cyprus Receive?

According to Civil Defence spokesperson Panayiotis Liasides, the CY-Alert system is designed to provide emergency information about any threat to public safety. Alerts will be sent in cases of natural disasters, large-scale wildfires, military actions, severe weather events, and other emergency situations where the government deems it necessary to warn the public urgently.

Notifications will be short, clear, and contain specific instructions tailored to the affected area and type of threat. Authorities note that the system is particularly important for Cyprus given the increasing number of wildfires and extreme weather events in the Mediterranean region, including earthquakes. In recent years, the island has regularly faced heatwaves, droughts, and heightened wildfire risks during the summer season.

CY-Alert Will Work Even Without Internet Access

One of the key features of the new system is its use of Cell Broadcast technology, which allows messages to be transmitted directly through mobile networks. This means that alerts will be received even if a phone is set to silent mode or is not connected to the internet. Messages will only fail to arrive in two situations: if the phone is completely switched off or if it is in airplane mode.

Users will not need to install a separate mobile application. To use CY-Alert, it is sufficient to update the smartphone’s operating system and enable emergency notifications in the device settings. A dedicated hotline, 1450, will be available in Cyprus to provide technical assistance. Through the service menu, users will be able to obtain guidance on configuring their phones.

Tourists in Cyprus Will Also Receive Alerts

The CY-Alert system will function not only for local residents but also for tourists visiting the island. According to Civil Defence representatives, even users of foreign mobile operators will be able to receive alerts if they are located within a potentially affected area. This is particularly important for Cyprus’s tourist regions, which host hundreds of thousands of international visitors during the summer months. An additional advantage of the system is its automatic language selection feature. Notifications will be displayed in the language configured on the user's mobile device.

System Testing Will Begin in June

Starting on 2 June and continuing for the following three weeks, authorities will begin sending test notifications to residents' mobile devices. Each message will clearly indicate that it is a test alert in order to prevent unnecessary concern among the public.

Experts note that the launch of CY-Alert brings Cyprus closer to modern European standards of civil protection and public safety. Similar systems are already operating successfully in many EU countries, including Greece, Germany, and France. Against the backdrop of growing climate-related risks and an increasingly unstable geopolitical environment in the region, Cypriot authorities view the creation of a unified emergency alert system as one of the key elements of national security.
