Compared to other EU citizens, Cypriots are very satisfied with their living conditions.
This is shown by the new report of the European Statistical Office Eurostat for the year 2023.
Incidentally, the island state is one of the countries where the number of rooms in houses and apartments corresponds to the number of family members. Only 1.1% of the Cypriot population lives in cramped conditions. Cypriots leave home at an average age of 27. This figure is close to the EU average.
Malta became the leader of the rating. In this country, only 0.3% of the population is dissatisfied with their housing conditions.
Ireland (%) was also in the top three. On the contrary, the highest rates of overcrowding and dissatisfaction with housing conditions in 2023 were registered in Romania (59.4%), Bulgaria (55.3%) and Latvia (54.8%). It is worth noting that in all these countries the proportion of people living in overcrowded conditions decreased slightly compared to 2022. Interestingly, the share of young EU residents aged 15-29 living in overcrowded households was 26% in 2023.
In turn, the average age at which young EU residents left their parents' home was 26.3 years in 2023. The highest average age of starting independent living was recorded in Croatia (31.8 years), Slovakia (31 years), Greece (30.6 years), Spain (30.4 years), Bulgaria and Italy (both 30 years). The lowest rates were recorded in Finland (21.4 years), Sweden and Denmark (both 21.8 years) and Estonia (22.8 years).
It should be recalled that overcrowded housing is housing with insufficient free space for the needs of its occupants.
