A third of all employees in Cyprus were overqualified in 2023. Women were 15.8 percentage points more overqualified than men.
This was announced recently by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.
Overqualified workers are those whose level of education is higher than that required by their occupation.
According to the agency, in Cyprus in particular, 27.5 per cent of Cypriots, 43.1 per cent of citizens of other EU countries permanently resident on the island and 39.3 per cent of citizens of third countries were overqualified last year.
Looking at the overall EU figures, the average level of overqualification in 2023 was 39.4 per cent for third country nationals and 31.3 per cent for citizens of other EU countries. However, the highest proportions of overqualified third-country nationals were concentrated in Greece (69.6%), Italy (64.1%) and Spain (56%). And the overqualified citizens of other EU countries were concentrated in Italy (45.1%), Cyprus (43.1%) and Spain (42.3%).
