A major program to upgrade urban and rural environments has been launched in Cyprus, with a budget of over €91 million. The plans were announced by Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou during an event dedicated to the development of local areas.
According to him, the program is designed to run for three years and is being implemented through the Land Department. Its main goal is to improve quality of life, develop infrastructure, and support local communities across the country. Special attention is given not only to major cities but also to rural areas, including the mountainous Troodos region, where authorities aim to curb population decline and stimulate economic activity.
A New Stage of Development: The Example of Apesia Village
The minister’s statement was made during the opening of the second phase of the reconstruction of the historic center of Apesia. This project has become an example of how modern solutions can be combined with the preservation of cultural heritage.
As part of the works, public spaces were upgraded, street accessibility improved, and areas around local churches enhanced. The spaces were designed to be convenient for both residents and tourists. Investments in the second phase amounted to €1.9 million. At the same time, the architectural approach included the use of local materials and compliance with environmental standards.

Why the Development of Public Spaces Matters
The minister emphasized that modern cities and villages should be built around high-quality public spaces. This includes parks, squares, green areas, and convenient urban infrastructure. Such projects not only improve the appearance of settlements but also encourage social activity, small business growth, and tourism. This approach aligns with global urban planning trends, where the focus is on a comfortable and environmentally friendly environment. In Cyprus, this is particularly relevant, as many communities require modernization and adaptation to new climate and economic conditions.
How the Program Will Affect the Economy and Tourism
The implementation of the program is expected to have a positive impact on the country’s economy. Improved infrastructure increases the attractiveness of regions for investors and also stimulates domestic tourism.
Mountain areas such as the Troodos region may receive an additional boost thanks to upgrades of roads, public areas, and cultural sites. This will help attract more visitors and support local communities. In addition, the development of eco-friendly projects aligns with Cyprus’s strategy for transitioning to a sustainable economy and reducing environmental impact.
