Cyprus Climbs to 34th Place in the Global Startup Ecosystem Rankings

Cyprus continues to rapidly strengthen its position on the global technology map. According to the new Global Startup Ecosystem Index 2026 published by StartupBlink, the value of Cyprus’s startup ecosystem increased by 62.7% over the past year, reaching $4.2 billion.

In the new global ranking, the country climbed six positions to reach 34th place among more than 120 countries worldwide. This marks the third consecutive successful year for Cyprus, which has consistently demonstrated one of the fastest startup sector growth rates among European Union member states. Experts attribute this momentum to growing international interest in the island as a technology and investment hub, as well as the rapid development of the local entrepreneurial environment.

Limassol Overtakes Nicosia and Becomes a Technology Hub

One of the biggest surprises of the ranking was Limassol’s leadership among Cypriot cities. For the first time, the city entered the global TOP-200 startup cities, ranking 191st and overtaking Nicosia.

Analysts note that over recent years Limassol has become the primary concentration point for international IT companies, fintech businesses, and startups targeting global markets. Additional growth drivers include the relocation of professionals, favorable tax conditions, and the rapid expansion of business infrastructure. Larnaca and Paphos also entered the global ranking, confirming that technological activity is spreading beyond the capital.

What Investors Are Funding in Cyprus in 2026

Cyprus currently holds particularly strong positions in digital services, entertainment, and video games. In the gaming segment, the country has already climbed to 16th place globally, representing one of the strongest performances among smaller European states.

Growing investor interest is also reflected in transaction volumes. During the first months of 2026, Cypriot startups attracted more than €12 million in investments. The key sectors include artificial intelligence, robotics, proptech, fintech, and mobile gaming platforms.

One of the largest deals involved Limassol-based company Moving Doors, which secured $6 million from the Greek investment fund Golden Age Capital. Investors from Eastern Europe, Greece, the Baltic states, and the Middle East are becoming increasingly active in Cyprus’s startup ecosystem.

Why Cyprus Has Become Attractive for IT Specialists

After 2022, Cyprus experienced a major influx of professionals from former Soviet Union countries, as well as entrepreneurs working in the technology sector. This significantly changed the structure of the island’s economy and strengthened internal demand for the development of the local capital market. Whereas Cyprus was previously viewed mainly as a convenient jurisdiction for hosting offices of international companies, the country is now gradually forming a startup ecosystem with access to early-stage investment and local acceleration programs.

The pre-seed and seed investment segments are growing especially quickly, allowing young projects to secure initial financing without relocating to London, Berlin, or Tel Aviv.

Silicon Valley Is Coming to Cyprus

A major signal for the international market was the decision to launch the Plug and Play accelerator in Nicosia. This network of corporate accelerators is considered one of the largest in the world and cooperates with global technology corporations and Silicon Valley investment funds.

At the same time, the Cyprus Research and Innovation Foundation is preparing large-scale support programs for startups and innovative businesses. In 2026, tens of millions of euros are expected to be allocated to grants and new technological initiatives.

Against the backdrop of growing investment, an influx of professionals, and increasing international attention, Cyprus is gradually transforming not only into a popular relocation destination but also into a fully fledged technology hub of the Eastern Mediterranean.
