Cyprus Extends Application Deadline for the “Mortgage to Rent” Scheme

The Cyprus Ministry of Finance has announced an extension of the government’s “Mortgage to Rent” scheme. Instead of the previously set deadline of 31 July 2026, applications can now be submitted until 30 September 2026.

The decision was made in response to strong public interest. According to the Ministry, the number of applications increased significantly in recent weeks, prompting the authorities to give potential participants an additional two months to complete and submit their documents. The scheme was reopened in May 2026, while all eligibility requirements and selection criteria remain unchanged.

How many applications have already been submitted

According to KEDIPES, the state-owned company managing the scheme, a total of 4,269 applications were submitted between its launch in 2023 and 31 July 2026. Of these:

  1. 929 applications were submitted between 4 May and 31 July 2026 following the reopening of the scheme;
  2. 1,211 applications have already been approved;
  3. 846 properties have officially been transferred to KEDIPES.

These figures show that the scheme remains in high demand among borrowers experiencing financial difficulties.

How the scheme works

The “Mortgage to Rent” scheme is intended for owners of primary residences who are unable to service their mortgage loans and are at risk of losing their property. Once an application is approved, the scheme works as follows:

  1. the property is transferred to the ownership of KEDIPES;
  2. the former owner continues to live in the house or apartment as a tenant;
  3. the state subsidises the rent, subject to the conditions of the scheme;
  4. the participant is able to remain in the property and avoid foreclosure proceedings.

The scheme forms part of the government’s policy to reduce the number of non-performing mortgage loans and provide social support to the most vulnerable households.

Where to submit documents

The Ministry of Finance reminds applicants that although application forms can be downloaded online, documents can only be submitted in person at one of KEDIPES’ regional offices in five cities across Cyprus:

  1. In Nicosia: 7 Grigoris Afxentiou Street, 1096.
  2. In Limassol: 97 Gladstonos Street, Oasis Complex, Block E, third floor, 3032.
  3. In Larnaca: 5 Georgiou Christodoulidou Street, 6041.
  4. In Paphos: 7 Kinyras Street, corner of Koroivou Street, Galaxias Building, Apartment 4, 8011.
  5. In Paralimni: 4 Griva Digeni Street, first floor, 5281.

Before submitting their applications, applicants are advised to make sure that their file contains all the necessary supporting documents. Additional information about the scheme is available from the KEDIPES customer service centre by phone at +357 22 743400.

The extension of the application deadline until 30 September gives borrowers an additional opportunity to benefit from government support and retain their only home. The scheme remains one of Cyprus’s key tools for reducing the social burden associated with problematic mortgage debt and helping families avoid losing their property.
