A new feature has been added to Cyprus’s “Digital Citizen” app. Since August 20, 2026, parents have been able to add the digital ID card of their minor child to their account. Previously, teenagers over the age of 14 could use a digital ID independently. The new feature was introduced as part of the app’s expanding functionality.
Details of the new feature
To add a minor’s digital ID card, the child must have a valid identity card. The digital version is stored in the app on the mother’s or father’s phone. Digital documents have the same legal validity as the corresponding physical documents when used within the Republic of Cyprus. Their authenticity can be verified directly through a QR code in the app. The digital ID card is not an international travel document and does not replace a passport for travel abroad.
In addition to an identity card, the “Digital Citizen” app can also store:
- a driving licence;
- a vehicle roadworthiness certificate (MOT);
- a fan card.
To verify a document, it is enough to scan its QR code — no special equipment is required. In addition, the app is integrated with Greece’s Gov.gr Wallet. This allows digital documents to be mutually recognized and verified in Cyprus and Greece. However, a valid passport or other suitable travel document is still required to cross the border.

“Digital Citizen” continues to expand
The app is developing rapidly: according to the government, the number of registered users exceeded 135,000 in 2025. New features planned for 2026 include a child’s digital ID in a parent’s app, residence documents for foreign nationals, age verification to protect minors online and an English-language version of the app.
As a result, parents in Cyprus no longer necessarily need to carry their child’s physical ID card in situations where a digital document is sufficient. The main requirement is that the child has a valid identity card and that the document is used in accordance with the app’s rules.
