Swiss expat research company InterNations has conducted a study analysing the cheapest and most expensive countries to live in.
As a result, 53 countries made the list. The study covered countries in Asia, Europe, the Americas and the Middle East, taking into account feedback from expats on financial stability and the ability to live comfortably on a family income. Incidentally, a number of factors are taken into consideration when choosing a location for temporary or permanent relocation, and one of the most important is the cost of living in a particular country.
Cyprus was ranked 38th. The majority of respondents have a positive view of life on the island, expecting an improvement in their personal financial situation and a better work-life balance.
Interestingly, for the third year in a row, Vietnam topped the list as the cheapest place to live.
Low prices impressed 86% of respondents, and 68 per cent said their income was enough to live comfortably. One respondent said that people in the country are incredibly friendly and expenses are minimal. The financial situation in Vietnam is considered satisfactory by 65% of expats, with almost 20% earning more than $150,000 per year.
Colombia came second in the affordability ranking, with Indonesia third. Greece ranked 24th, ahead of Cyprus. At the same time, Canada was identified as the most expensive country, followed by Finland and the UK. In Canada, 53% of respondents said their income was not enough to live comfortably, while two-thirds thought the country was too expensive. In addition, 26% of respondents described their financial situation as 'very poor'.
