Cyprus Continues the Active Installation of Smart Electricity Meters

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus is continuing the large-scale rollout of smart meters. In December, installation work will cover several districts across the island. The modernisation programme is part of a long-term strategy aimed at improving energy efficiency, reducing grid losses, and preparing infrastructure for the transition to intelligent consumption and distribution systems.

Where installation work is planned in December

In Nicosia, installations will take place in the areas between Stavrou Street and Spyros Kyprianou Avenue, on both sides of Tsirion and Stavrou Streets, as well as on Demostheni Severi Avenue near the French Embassy. In Lakatamia, work will cover the area from Spyros Kyprianou Avenue to Hippokratous Street.

In Limassol, equipment will be installed south of the industrial zone, including both sides of Agios Athanasios and Grivas Digenis Streets. Larnaca residents can expect smart meter installations within the area of Grigori Afxentiou Avenue, Archbishop Kyprianos Avenue, and up to the roundabout near the port.

In the free areas of Famagusta, installations will extend from the eastern part of Kavo Greko Avenue to Protaras Avenue. In Paphos, the installation zones include the territory between Poseidonos, Apostolos Pavlos, Agioi Anargyroi, and Melina Mercouri Avenues.

Short power outages expected

The Electricity Authority warns that brief power interruptions may occur during the replacement of traditional meters with digital ones. These outages typically last no more than 20 minutes and are necessary to safely connect the new equipment.

Why is Cyprus switching to smart meters?

The smart meter installation project is a key step in modernising the island’s energy system. The new devices allow automatic transmission of consumption data, more accurate billing, faster detection of faults, and better integration of renewable energy sources. In 2026, the first major phase of the project is expected to be completed, paving the way for the gradual introduction of dynamic tariffs and expanded options for households to manage their own energy use.
