Cypriot renters have expressed concerns

Many Cypriots who have to rent on the island feel insecure, according to a new Prindex survey for 2024.

According to the results of the portal's report, around one in four Cypriot tenants, or 25%, feel insecure. Interestingly, this figure is higher than the global average of 23%. It is worse in Turkey, where 37% of respondents said they could be threatened, Greece (35%) and Ukraine (33%). It should be noted that the survey was conducted in 108 countries.

Looking at the reasons why Cypriots feel insecure:

  1. 11% of the population said that the landlord could evict them from their rented property at any time;
  2. 14% cited high rents and the fear of not being able to pay the required amount for the rented accommodation;
  3. 4% expressed fear of arguments with family or relatives;
  4. 4% fear the death of loved ones and possible problems with renting as a result;
  5. 5% said that the property could be confiscated by a company;
  6. 5% fear possible confiscation by the government and others.

It is interesting to note that today about 46% of the Cypriot population are property owners, while the rest rent.

Арендующие жилье киприоты высказали опасения

We would like to remind you that property rental prices in Cyprus have risen sharply in recent years.

Naturally, many of those with extra square footage in their property are looking to make money from it. With rising construction costs, loan repayments and rents, many Cypriots are finding it increasingly difficult to secure affordable housing. In an attempt to help those in need, the government recently launched a new €44.3 million housing programme. Many officials are confident that this initiative will make a huge difference in the long term.

There is no doubt that the housing situation in Cyprus is difficult. Rising prices, limited affordable housing and increasing demand have created difficulties for a large part of the population, especially those on low incomes. While the government's plans aim to address this problem, the results are yet to be seen. However, the situation is not yet a full-blown crisis. The problem is serious but not tragic, experts say. There is a clear need for more affordable housing, and government action must be sustained to ensure tangible improvements in the coming years.
