On Tuesday 14 January, the Cyprus Architects Association expressed concern about the building boom in the picturesque village of Platres, located in the Troodos mountains.
In particular, the experts warned that the village could lose its historical architectural appearance and the surrounding nature could suffer as a result of the numerous projects currently being implemented there.
The architects are particularly concerned about the renovation of the Forest Park Hotel building, which they say is steeped in Cypriot history. Built in the early 1930s, the hotel was the first building on the island to be designed in the Art Nouveau style. The Cyprus Institute of Architects recognised the need to renovate the building and stressed the importance of preserving the original character of the hotel. The experts said the hotel should become a cultural heritage site and called on the state to create a special structure to protect modern heritage buildings.
The association also pointed to the need for regulations governing the development of Platres, which would guarantee that renovation and new construction in the village would take into account its unique character and historical significance.
Finally, the architects pointed out the importance of harmonising the new buildings that will be erected in the village with the natural environment, ensuring that the development is in line with the historical and aesthetic values of the area.
It is worth remembering that investors are now actively investing in the development of Platres.
In the mountain village at the foot of the Troodoos Mountains, old and abandoned hotels are being bought and renovated, and new complexes and luxury villas are being built. This is transforming Platres from a deserted village into a major tourist centre. The promotion of various housing projects in Platres is improving the image of the village, creating new jobs and, consequently, an influx of population. At the same time, the village may lose its historic appearance in the near future.
Some of the largest projects currently underway in the village are GURU Mountain Hill Resort, Tree Hotel, Greenwood, Forest Park.
