The Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry announced that plans for construction of the Technological Park in Pentakomo (Limassol district) can be implemented with international investors, especially from China.
The ministry noted that it intends to hold a presentation of a grandiose project for future investors. As expected, investors will be given 15 days to submit their proposals for adjusting the development plan, after which the ministry will announce a tender.
As you might know, the idea of building a technology park was first announced in Cyprus about 20 years ago.
They even chose a place where such a park could be built, then they began to decide who would build the project and what total cost. During the first phase of preparation, the island's government carried out the process of alienating land owned by individuals. In return, the owners were given similar plots in other parts of the island.
Experts who carried out a preliminary study of the viability of the technology park in 2006 estimated that the project would bring in about 780 million euros per year. Microsoft and Google were also mentioned.
About 82 million euros were supposed to be allocated from the island's treasury for the implementation of the project.
However, in 2010, due to the global financial crisis, the budget was reduced to 10 million euros. Then it was decided to increase the amount to 50 million euros. But in 2013, the financial crisis hit Cyprus, the government shelved the project.
Three years later, it was decided to revive the idea of creating the technology park. The project was supervised by the Minister of Energy, Trade, Industry of Cyprus, Yiorgos Lakkotrypes. During his trips abroad, he was actively looking for investors and a company that had experience in running similar projects.
According to the terms of the tender, the government must bring to the park communications (electricity, sewerage, water supply, telephone lines and roads). For this purpose, 3.5 million euros have been allocated to the state budget. In turn, the investor must lay communications in the park and build research laboratories, offices for business incubators, a hotel for invited scientists and visitors to the park.
In May 2017, the Ministry of Commerce rejected the only bid from Thailand's Wyncoast Industrial Park because it did not meet the terms of the tender. The Ministry took into account the commission's decision and declared the auction invalid.
Since then, the project has not been remembered for a long time. In 2022, foreign investors again began to show their interest. The ministry is confident that if the tendering strategy is changed, the project will have a bright future.
