The Paralimni – Deryneia municipality has officially received planning permission for the modernization of Paralimni’s central square. The document was issued by the Local Government Organization of the free areas of Famagusta — EOA Ammochostou. This means that the project is moving into the practical phase, and construction work will begin soon.
This is a large-scale urban reconstruction intended to radically change the appearance of Paralimni’s historic center and enhance its functionality. Authorities describe the future square as a landmark site that will become a new point of attraction for residents and tourists.
Permit obtained — project moves to launch phase
The application for planning permission was submitted on November 4, 2025. After close cooperation between the municipality and regional services, the project was assessed through an accelerated procedure. By February 2026, the process was fully completed and official approval was granted.
The document was handed to the mayor of Paralimni – Deryneia in the presence of EOA Ammochostou leadership, the deputy mayor, and the municipal engineer. The fast approval highlights the strategic importance of the project for the entire region.
What the new central square of Paralimni will be like
The future square is designed to accommodate up to 3,5 thousand people at the same time. The space will be used for cultural events, public gatherings, and city celebrations. The project includes an area for concerts and festivals, a landscaped park, a memorial zone, and extensive greenery.
The architectural concept envisages creating a central focal point from which views of three historic churches in the area will visually open. At the same time, the project includes a symbolic connection of the square with the lake and the sea through the introduction of a water element into the spatial design. This approach strengthens Paralimni’s identity as a city combining traditions and natural surroundings.
Special attention will be given to a barrier-free environment. The space is designed according to the principle of universal accessibility so that people with disabilities can move freely throughout the entire area.
Investment and project financing
The total cost of the project is estimated at approximately 5 million euros. The municipality has already submitted a request for co-financing through the Land Department, aiming to include the site in the list of official urban development projects.
Authorities emphasize that the reconstruction of the central square will become part of a broader urban renewal program. At the same time, a project for paving and improving the historic core is being implemented, and a multi-level parking facility is being built near the municipality. All three projects form a unified urban concept at a European level.
A new landmark for residents and tourists
In recent years, Paralimni has been actively developing not only as the administrative center of the region but also as a point of attraction for domestic tourism. Proximity to Protaras and Ayia Napa strengthens visitor flows, and the renewal of the city center is expected to make it more attractive year-round.
The Paralimni – Deryneia municipality states that the new square will become a long-term symbol of the city, preserving traditional elements while offering modern infrastructure. Construction is expected to begin soon, and the completion of the project should become one of the most notable events in the development of the urban environment of eastern Cyprus.
