Cypriot authorities have announced a major redevelopment of the central bus station in Nicosia's Solomou Square.
On Friday 14 March, the Ministry of Transport and the capital's municipality signed an agreement aimed at creating a modern transport hub, improving conditions for passengers and introducing environmentally friendly transport.
As part of the agreement, the station will undergo major changes. These include:
- New infrastructure - comfortable waiting rooms for passengers, renovated platforms and improved shelters.
- Transition to electric transport - a fleet of electric buses will be introduced as part of the project, reducing air pollution.
- Driver comfort - Sanitary facilities and rest areas for staff will be provided.
- Optimising routes - a review of traffic patterns will improve the reliability and comfort of public transport.
Alexis Vafiadis, the Cypriot Minister of Transport, stressed that the modernisation of the bus station is an important step in the development of Nicosia's transport system.
The project aims not only to improve services for passengers, but also to create comfortable working conditions for drivers, something that has long been discussed in the professional community.
