Residents of Cyprus’s Mountain Villages to Receive Financial Assistance

The Government of Cyprus has approved the extension of its financial support program for residents of mountainous and remote communities through 2026. The decision was adopted by the Council of Ministers and continues the state policy of supporting regions that face additional challenges due to their geographical location.

Authorities note that the aim of the program is not only to partially compensate residents for their expenses but also to preserve life in rural areas. In recent years, many villages in Cyprus have continued to lose population as young people move to larger cities in search of employment opportunities and better infrastructure.

Why the Government Supports Mountainous Areas

The depopulation of rural areas remains one of Cyprus’s most serious challenges. According to government services, many villages in the Troodos Mountains and remote parts of the island are experiencing an aging population and a decline in the number of permanent residents.

High transportation costs, limited access to public services, and the distance from major economic centers create additional financial burdens for families living in these communities.

For this reason, the government has been implementing special support programs for several years, aimed at making rural life more attractive and offsetting some of the additional costs associated with living in remote areas.

Financial Assistance for Residents of High-Altitude Villages

One form of support is intended for residents of communities located at an elevation of at least 600 meters above sea level. The annual payment depends on the altitude of the village. The higher the settlement, the greater the amount of financial assistance. An additional payment is also provided for each family member, regardless of age or pension status.

For example, a family of four living in an eligible mountain village may receive more than €800 per year. Beneficiaries can be citizens of Cyprus and other European Union countries who have been permanent residents of the qualifying community for at least the previous two years. The accommodation may be either owner-occupied or rented.

Additional Support for Residents of Remote Areas

A separate program applies to communities located a significant distance from urban centers. This support measure is aimed at working residents who must travel long distances every day for employment, healthcare, education, and everyday needs.

The amount of compensation depends on the distance between the settlement and the nearest town or city. The farther away the village is located, the higher the annual payment. Authorities emphasize that this support helps offset transportation expenses and contributes to maintaining economic activity in remote parts of the island.

Special Conditions for Tillyria

Residents of the Tillyria region in northwestern Cyprus will once again receive enhanced payments. Additional allowances are available to residents of Kato Pyrgos, Pano Pyrgos, Pachyammos, Pomos, Pigenia, Agios Theodoros Tillyrias, and several other communities in the region.

The special status of this area is linked to its geographical isolation and the historical circumstances that arose after the events of 1974. Many residents of the region still face limited transportation access and additional challenges in their daily lives. For this reason, the government continues to maintain special benefits and increased state payments for Tillyria.

Regional Development Remains a Priority

In recent years, the Cypriot authorities have increasingly invested in the development of rural areas. In addition to direct financial assistance, programs are being implemented to modernize roads, improve internet connectivity, support small businesses, and promote eco-tourism.

Particular attention is being given to the mountain villages of the Troodos region, which are becoming increasingly popular among foreign property buyers, digital nomads, and city residents seeking a quieter lifestyle.

Economists note that maintaining a permanent population in rural areas is of strategic importance to the island. Supporting local communities helps preserve cultural heritage, promote domestic tourism, and prevent further depopulation of regional areas.

The extension of the financial assistance program through 2026 confirms the government’s commitment to continuing support for residents of remote and mountainous regions, which remain an important part of Cyprus’s social and economic structure.
