After extensive renovations, the Environmental Education Center has opened its doors on Cape Akrotiri in the Limassol area. Over 400 students from across the island are expected to visit during the summer.
Thanks to the efforts of a team led by Dr. Thomas Hadjiciriakou and Georgios Theodorou, the center has been given a new look and concept. The center's mission is to inspire children to care for the environment through practical experience, games, and research, not simply to teach them about it.
New technologies in environmental education services
After more than a decade of operation, the center has completely upgraded its equipment. They have installed interactive whiteboards, replaced electronic equipment, and added powerful telescopes for bird watching. All of this helps children learn and actively engage in the process.
One of the main innovations is QR quests, which allow children to explore the exhibits independently. This approach makes learning fun and accessible, even for the youngest children.
From the legends of the peninsula to caring for nature
The center's program begins with a short film about the origins of the Akrotiri Peninsula and its ecosystem. Then, children are introduced to real natural objects, such as the Salt Lake, beaches where sea turtles lay their eggs, and wetlands that serve as a refuge for migratory birds.
Using telescopes, young participants can observe wildlife in real time and learn to identify different species of birds. The educational route is designed so that children don't just memorize facts; they also feel a connection with the island's nature.
Inspiring Education
Each two-hour session includes both theoretical and practical elements. During breaks, children can relax in the open-air playground, creating a balanced and comfortable atmosphere for learning about ecology.
The center is available for booking by groups and school organizations from all over Cyprus. It has already become a magnet for those who want to give their children an inspiring experience interacting with nature, not just a summer vacation.
