An environmental center will be established in Nicosia

The Municipality of Nicosia announced a tender for the construction of a new environmental center in the area of Lakatamia, on the banks of the Pedieos River.

The project will be realized within the framework of the strategy for the integrated and spatial development of the Cypriot capital, with the financial support of the European Funds.

According to a representative of the City Hall, it will contribute greatly to the modernization of the area, while promoting the principles of sustainable development, protection, conservation and rational management of the natural wealth of the region. According to the plan, the new center will have a lecture and presentation hall, two exhibition halls, offices, offices and a cafeteria. Outside, a botanical garden will be created, where endemic trees and shrubs will be planted, a spacious parking lot, recreation areas, modern street lighting and benches will be installed.

This project is scheduled to start in the summer of 2024. The works will last approximately 24 months.

Recall that the ecological center is part of the grand project of the city linear park along the bed of the Pedieos river for 30 million euros.

An intelligent monitoring system, a fiber optic network, a lighting system using renewable energy sources (RES), new bicycle and pedestrian paths, a crisis management center, 14 new bridges, fire and flood sensors, recreation areas and information stands, a playground - all this and much more will be implemented within the framework of the strategy of integrated spatial development of the municipalities of Nicosia, Strovolos, Lakatamia, Engomi, Agios Dometios, Aglantzia.

The project aims to make the area along the capital's main river convenient for recreation for the residents of Nicosia, preserve biodiversity, create a safe space in the park, and combat seasonal flooding.

The Pedieos is the longest (98 km) river in Cyprus. It originates near the monastery of Maheras and flows into the Gulf of Famagusta. During the rainy season, its maximum depth reaches 10 meters.
