Emergency Access Road Under Construction in the Agios Athanasios Industrial Area of Limassol

Construction has begun on a new emergency access road in the Agios Athanasios industrial area of Limassol, addressing one of the longest-standing infrastructure requests from the local business community.

The project is expected to significantly improve safety and accessibility in the area, which is home to approximately 120 businesses and employs more than 5,000 people. Construction work started last week following years of planning and coordination between government agencies, municipal authorities, and business representatives.

Why the New Access Road Was Needed

Until now, the industrial zone has effectively relied on a single main access road. This situation has long raised concerns among both business owners and emergency services. In the event of a major fire, industrial accident, or urgent evacuation, the sole exit could become a serious obstacle to emergency response efforts.

For this reason, the Agios Athanasios Industrialists Association has been advocating for the project for many years, emphasizing the need for an alternative route in emergency situations. According to Chamber of Commerce representative Vasos Dimitriadis, the new infrastructure is of strategic importance for the entire industrial area and will significantly enhance the safety of both employees and businesses.

New Road Will Connect the Industrial Zone to the Columbia Area

According to the project plans, the new road will be approximately 500 m long. The route will extend toward the Agios Athanasios residential area and provide an additional connection through the Columbia neighborhood, helping to ease pressure on the existing road network while creating an alternative route for vehicles.

The project is estimated to cost around €250,000. Despite its relatively modest budget, it is considered highly important for the continued development of the industrial zone, which remains one of Limassol’s largest hubs of business activity.

Amathus Mayor Kyriakos Xydias stated that the start of construction is the result of close cooperation among all stakeholders. According to him, the project demonstrates what can be achieved through effective coordination between local authorities, government services, and the business community.

In recent years, the Agios Athanasios industrial area has continued to expand, hosting manufacturing facilities, logistics centers, trading companies, and service providers that play an important role in the economy of Limassol and Cyprus as a whole.

Infrastructure Development Becomes a Priority

As business activity continues to grow, infrastructure upgrades are becoming increasingly important. Improvements to the road network, enhanced safety measures, and the creation of additional transport links are viewed as essential requirements for the future development of the industrial sector.

The new emergency access road is expected not only to improve safety for more than 5,000 workers but also to enhance traffic management in an area that accommodates hundreds of trucks and private vehicles every day.

Once completed, the Agios Athanasios industrial zone will gain a critical infrastructure asset that has long been regarded as one of the most necessary projects for its sustainable and safe operation.
