About 70% of Cypriots own their own homes

On Friday the 27th of December, Eurostat published its new study.

According to the data collected for the year 2023, almost 70% of Cypriots own their own home.

Interestingly, this figure is very close to the EU average (69%). At the same time, Cyprus leads the way in terms of housing quality problems. For example, 31.6% of houses on the island have leaking roofs, damp walls and damaged window frames, compared with an EU average of 15.5%.

In addition, according to the Eurostat report, 71.3% of dwellings in Cyprus are under-occupied - the highest rate in the EU. This mainly affects properties occupied by elderly people and couples whose adult children have moved out. This compares with only 33.3% in the EU in 2023.

Finally, 31.2% of residents in Cyprus prefer to rent, compared to 30.8% in the EU. The most sought-after type of dwelling in Cyprus is the 2-bedroom dwelling, with an average of 2.6 persons living in it.

Eurostat found that 14% of Cypriots aged 16 and over live in dwellings that have been improved in terms of energy efficiency in the last five years.

At the same time, the overcrowding rate in Cyprus is only 2.2%, well below the EU average of 16.8%. This indicates comfortable living conditions for most families on the island.
