A grand opening of the small fishing port took place near the village of Ormidia, which is located in the Larnaca distric.
The ceremony on Thursday, April 25, was attended by the Minister of Agriculture and Environment, Maria Panayiotou, and the Minister of Transport, Communications and Public Works, Alexis Vafeades.
It is worth noting that the project took about two years. The port's modernization received an investment of 1.6 million euros. Major renovations were carried out in the harbor, expanding both land and sea areas, installing modern equipment and lighting, and adding new breakwaters. In addition, the existing warehouse of the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research was demolished and replaced with a spacious building for servicing fishermen and a convenient parking area.
Thanks to the modernization of the fishing harbor in Ormidia, we have been able to create a safe and functional docking area for boats and fishermen, which will have a positive impact on the development of fishing activities in this region. We have been supporting the fishing sector in practice for many years by implementing specific projects aimed at improving fishing infrastructure, and we do not intend to stop there. The reconstruction of the port in Ormidia is part of a larger project that makes an invaluable contribution to our country's economy. The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, through the competent Department of Fisheries and Marine Research, which this year celebrates its 60th anniversary, achieves a strategic goal aimed at enhancing the sector's competitiveness, integrating environmental aspects, and supporting fishing communities," Panayiotou stated during the ceremony.
In turn, Vafeadis expressed confidence that "the fishing refuge in Ormidia will become a functional and safe place for mooring boats, with all the necessary infrastructure and facilities to support fishing activities and further development of the local community." Finally, he assured the fishermen that the government is always on their side, therefore it constantly provides support as much as possible.
"Our ministry will always be a partner and advocate for such projects," concluded the minister.
