Larnaca will have a plastic waste recycling plant

Alphakat Holdings International Ltd has submitted its new project to the Cyprus Department of Environment for review.

According to the release, the developer intends to erect a large plant for recycling plastic waste by pyrolysis in the village of Koshi, which is located in the Larnaca area.

It should be noted that the plot of land on which the plant will be built is located in an industrial zone. Alphakat Holdings International Ltd leases the vast area from the local municipality. The contract is concluded for 99 years.

According to the plan, the commercial project will consist of five pyrolysis plants, which after start-up will be able to recycle 50 tons of plastic (except PVC) daily and produce 25 tons of fuel oil. The pyrolysis equipment will be provided by BESTON GROUP CO LTD. The total area of the plant will be 3.5 thousand m2. The plant will operate 24 hours a day, 330 days a year.

The project is expected to contribute to the sustainable and rational management of plastic waste in Cyprus. It will also strengthen the Cypriot economy by reducing the need to import fuel from abroad.

Pyrolysis is a thermochemical decomposition reaction of organic and some inorganic compounds. Exposure of large molecules of a substance to high temperatures causes them to break interatomic bonds and form smaller molecular compounds.

The pyrolysis process at the new plant in Larnaca will proceed as follows.

First, plastic waste will be placed in the reactor of the plant. Using diesel fuel, the reactor will be heated to 350 degrees Celsius and the plastic will be melted for 7-8 hours until it turns into liquid oil and gas. The resulting substances will be run through catalytic chambers to purify them of paraffinic oils. This will be followed by a condensation process and collection of the resulting product into tanks.

As a result, 35-45% of the total volume of processed waste will be fuel with properties similar to fuel oil. It can be used for power generation, in factories and boiler houses. Another 30-35% will be technical carbon, which will be further compressed into briquettes and used for combustion in production. The resulting gas will be used to heat the plant's reactor in the next cycle.

The semi-open area below the five pyrolysis units will be used to store carbon, various chemicals, and parts and equipment. A separate building will be constructed to house offices, a sanitary area, locker rooms and a kitchen, which will be connected to the pyrolysis units by a corridor. For the convenience of employees, a parking lot for 20 cars will be built, 2 of which will be allocated for people with disabilities.
