New path for pedestrians and cyclists has been opened in Limassol

Limassol celebrated the grand opening of a new pedestrian and cycle route along the Aktia coastal road. The project forms part of the Limassol 2030 strategy, which aims to transform previously abandoned areas into modern, convenient recreation, sports and walking zones.

The coastal area has been given a new lease of life

Limassol Mayor Yiannis Armetis noted that the project has completely changed the area's appearance. It now boasts modern paving to reduce surface heating in hot weather, lighting, new trees and convenient walking and cycling paths. Additionally, new roads are being constructed to connect Tsiflikoudia and Agios Ioannis with the city centre and the coastal promenade.

Particular attention has been paid to creating a new 350-metre beach area. To this end, thousands of tonnes of construction and household waste were removed to provide residents and tourists with a clean, safe public space.

This is a new approach to urban development

According to the mayor, this is not just the launch of a separate project, but a new philosophy of urban development based on speed of implementation and a practical approach. The work is being carried out quickly, bypassing the lengthy studies and procedures that usually slow down development. The next stage of the initiative is to clean up the seabed. This is scheduled to launch on 27 September 2025 with the support of the Cyprus Maritime and Shipping Institute.

We are opening not just a new facility, but a new way of thinking — fast, efficient and people-oriented, Armeftis emphasised.

Limassol as an example of sustainable development

The opening of the route is part of a larger programme to modernise Limassol, including renovating transport infrastructure, improving coastal areas and protecting the environment. The city's goal is to serve as a model for sustainable and environmentally friendly development while maintaining its status as one of Cyprus's most dynamic and attractive centres.
