A new online service providing detailed statistics on building permits has been launched in Nicosia. The platform, introduced by the Nicosia District Local Government Organisation (EOA), gives residents and professionals access to up-to-date data on the performance of the licensing service.
The new page allows users to view monthly results, statistics by application type and category, trend charts, as well as summary indicators for the past two years.
How many permits were issued over 2 years
According to the published data, over the past two years — up to and including July 2026 — a total of 28,811 licences were issued in the Nicosia district. Of these:
10,768 — for planning;
18,043 — for construction.
Particularly high figures were recorded in July 2026. The completion rate reached 105.9% in the first category and 120.1% in the second.
A figure above 100% means that during the relevant period the authority completed the processing of more applications than the number of valid applications it received, allowing it to gradually reduce the accumulated backlog of pending cases.
Focus on transparency and reducing the backlog
Nicosia EOA Chairman Constantinos Yiorkadjis said that publishing the statistics should make the work of the service more transparent. According to him, the data will be published every month so that citizens can independently track the performance of the licensing service.
Georgina Kourtella, Director of the Development Licensing Service of the Nicosia EOA, noted that the figures indicate a gradual reduction in the backlog inherited by the new authority from the former local administrative bodies. The creation of the EOAs was part of Cyprus’s local government reform. Since July 1, 2024, five District Local Government Organisations have assumed responsibilities including licensing.
Nicosia EOA General Director Constantinos Parmaklis noted that over the past 2 years the authority has effectively had to build a unified licensing service from scratch, including permanent staffing, office and archive premises, and the necessary equipment. The new statistics system is intended to provide citizens with continuous access to up-to-date information about the service’s performance.
