New Road to Be Built in the Coastal Area of Polis Chrysochous Municipality

The Municipality of Polis Chrysochous is advancing a major project for the construction and modernization of its coastal road network. The new transport corridor is included in the Master Plan of the Cyprus Department of Lands and Surveys. To move the project forward, the municipal authorities have already submitted an Environmental Impact Assessment study to the Department of Environment. According to the document, which is open for public consultation until June 10, the further development, updating, and technical supervision of the project will be assigned to a private consultant.

Where the New Coastal Road Will Run

According to the project plans, the new road will be located within the municipal boundaries of Polis Chrysochous at an elevation of approximately 20–25 metres above sea level, crossing agricultural land, tourist facilities, and residential areas. It will improve transport links with the communities of Neo Chorio, Pelathousa, Androlikou, Makounta, Drouseia, and Steni.

The total length of the new road will be approximately 4,570 metres. Of this, 420 metres will belong to the secondary road network. Another 3.4 kilometres will make use of existing infrastructure, while the remaining 750 metres will require the construction of an entirely new section through privately owned agricultural land. The project includes the construction of three new roundabouts, designed to improve road safety and traffic flow in the resort area.

Cycle Lanes, Sidewalks, and Green Areas

The project includes two main road profile designs. The first option features a two-lane road with a total width of 17 metres, including the carriageway, sidewalks, a cycle lane, and landscaped green areas. The second option will be wider, at 21 metres. It will additionally include a dedicated right-turn lane and a central median island, as well as pedestrian zones, cycle paths, and green infrastructure.

Once completed, the road will include bus stops and modern infrastructure for alternative forms of transport. Authorities hope this will reduce dependence on private vehicles among both residents and tourists while making travel along the coastal area more convenient.

When Construction Will Begin and Project Cost

All construction work is planned to be carried out in a single phase. The preliminary cost of the project is estimated at approximately €12 million. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in 2028, with an estimated completion period of around 15 months. According to experts, the development of road infrastructure in western Cyprus is becoming increasingly important due to growing tourist arrivals and the continued expansion of the real estate sector in the Paphos region.

How Polis Chrysochous Will Change After the Project Is Completed

The new road will serve several functions simultaneously. It will act as a modern coastal highway while also providing an alternative route bypassing the town centre. The Municipality of Polis Chrysochous emphasizes that the project is of significant importance for the region’s future development, both economically and socially.

The new transport infrastructure will improve access to beaches, hotels, restaurants, and tourist attractions, enhancing the investment appeal of the coastline.

In addition, the project includes comprehensive redevelopment of the coastal zone. Walking routes, cycle paths, green spaces, and public recreational areas will be created along the road. Authorities hope this will help establish a modern and well-organized seaside promenade of European standards.

One of the project's key objectives is to reduce traffic congestion in the centre of the municipality. The new road will provide faster and safer connections between tourist districts and residential neighbourhoods. The most noticeable impact is expected during the peak tourist season, when traffic volumes in the region increase significantly. This will help reduce congestion, lower noise levels, and improve road safety.
