The Limassol Water Supply Authority (SYL) has announced that a new reservoir will soon be available in the Germasogeia area.
On Thursday 27 June, the authority signed a contract with the contractor M. Bakaliaos & Sons Ltd for the construction of a 4,000 m3 reservoir.
The project includes the installation of new pipelines, control wells with flow meters, switches and equipment necessary for the normal operation of the reservoir, as well as the landscaping of the surrounding area.
Construction is expected to start as early as September 2024 and take about 20 months. The reservoir is expected to be operational by April 2026 at the latest. Once the project is completed, the reservoir will be able to supply water to the areas north of the municipalities of Germasogeia and Agios Athanasios.
The cost of the project is estimated at €1,664,588. Funding for the project will come from the budget of the Limassol Water Supply Authority (SYL). The construction of a new water collection tank will significantly improve the quality of the services provided by the Authority.
It should be recalled that Cyprus regularly faces a shortage of fresh water. The situation is becoming more critical every year.
The main problem is the lack of fresh water resources. Almost all underground springs and keys now have "spoilt" water. Either it has become salty due to the proximity of the sea, or it is enriched with minerals that are harmful to the human body. The island is therefore building reservoirs to collect and treat rainwater.
