The construction of a major stormwater system to prevent potential flooding in Larnaca continues apace.
The local municipality recently summarised the results of the previously announced tender and selected a contractor to carry out the important project.
On Monday 18 November, Larnaca Town Hall signed a contract with Iacovou Brothers Construction Ltd. Under the terms of the contract, the company will construct an extensive storm water drainage system in the Kamares area. Specifically, the works include:
- Demolition of the existing canal and construction of a new open rectangular canal with concreting and construction of an earth canal.
- Demolition and reconstruction of the Dryadon Street bridge.
- Reconstruction of the road section between Dryades Street and Limassol Avenue with a new open channel on a modified route.
- Construction of a new bridge on Limassol Avenue, east of the existing bridge.
- Reconstruction of Larisis Street and construction of a new bridge.
- Reconstruction of the area around the aqueduct and construction of a footbridge with a riverbed.
The cost of the project is estimated at EUR 6.6 million + VAT. The implementation period will be 30 months. Work is expected to start in January 2025. The project is co-financed by the National Recovery and Sustainability Plan. It will be carried out on the basis of a study prepared by a consortium of D. Toumazis and Associates Consulting Engineers.
It is worth noting that the issue of upgrading the flood control channels in the Camares area has been raised several times. The fact is that this part of the city is often flooded during the winter rains. It is expected that this problem will soon be solved for good.
Previously, Larnaca completed the first phase of a major flood control system.
In a contract worth €1.89 million, 3 kilometres of catchment pipes were installed to serve the catchment area around Alexandrou Panagouli Avenue. The flood protection system covers the area on both sides of the avenue. The idea is that the pipes will collect excess rainwater and channel it into the existing canal of Spiros Kyprianou Avenue.
It should be noted that the project will be carried out by S. HADJICHRISTOFI CONSTRUCTION LIMITED, which won the tender for the project. According to the study, the probability of flooding in Larnaca after the necessary works have been carried out is 1 in 50 (%). This is assuming that the frequency of rainfall remains unchanged. Other works include the widening of road bridges in the area of Kalo Chorio, Mirmidonon Street, Limassol Avenue, among others. The embankments and debris in the Kalo Chorio riverbed on the avenue will be removed.
