On June 14, the official opening of a new, large-scale city park will take place in the heart of Nicosia. Constructed on the site of the former GSP Stadium, it will transform the city's landscape and will be a distinctive public space with a capacity of up to 18,000 individuals.
The ceremony will be presided over by Cyprus President Nicos Christodoulides.
The €19.7 million project represents the most significant urban development initiative in recent years and exemplifies a novel approach to urban planning.
The architectural concept of the park is based on the principle of "complex relief," in which the central part is lowered and the edges are raised. This creates a natural barrier from city noise while forming numerous entrances and cozy corners for relaxation. This configuration ensures intuitive accessibility and protection for the park. The new public space includes:
- Two green hills that serve as natural filters and recreation areas.
- Open-air amphitheater suitable for a variety of events, including concerts, performances, and cultural events.
- Multifunctional hall and conference center.
- Citizen service center.
- Gallery is available for your viewing.
- Café and a kiosk.
- Restaurants and retail establishments.
The facility includes two subterranean parking garages, offering a total of 554 parking spaces. These spaces are designated for various categories, including electric vehicles, individuals with disabilities, and families with children.
The architectural aesthetics of the site are complemented by a water curtain along Evagora Street and an artificial stream near the amphitheater, which create a pleasant microclimate and a relaxing atmosphere in the heart of the city.
The project was funded under the THALEIA 2021–2027 program, with support from the EU Cohesion Fund, the Cypriot government, and the municipality of Nicosia.
Construction commenced in November 2021, and despite an 18-month delay, the project's completion marked a new era for the urban space.
At the time of opening, the facility will be handed over in a so-called "cold finish" state, meaning that the interior commercial spaces will remain unrenovated and will be fitted out by tenants according to their individual designs. The opening of the new park will provide Nicosia with a location for walking and relaxation, as well as a new cultural and social attraction.
