Larnaca municipality intends to build a new indoor municipal theater in the Dekelia district, on one of the sites where oil storage tanks used to be located.
This was announced on Wednesday, January 3, by Larnaca Mayor Andreas Vyras.
Vyras noted that the new public space will be located on the land that was handed over to the municipality after the oil companies left the area.
At the same time, Vyras mentioned that the original plan was to build a theater in the Pambula district in the city center. However, the process of acquiring land for the project in that neighborhood proved to be too time consuming.
And since the municipality will receive land in the Dekelia area from the oil companies in exchange for a license for private development in Vasiliko, it was deemed appropriate to allocate it for the construction of the new theater.
The ambitious project, according to the mayor, will take into account the merger of Larnaca municipality with Livadia municipality and the village community of Oroklini as part of the wider local government reforms that will take place in Cyprus in 2024.
The new theater will serve three districts of the city at once," Vyras noted.
He added that the grand project has already been approved by the Larnaca City Council. The municipality is now seeking funding from the European Union to help build the theater, given the city's candidacy for the title of European Capital of Culture in 2030.
Finally, Viras mentioned that the municipality also plans to renovate the existing buildings of the Georgios Lykourgos Municipal Theater and the Scala Theater in the city.
