Construction work on a large-scale project to create a modern events and recreation space in the government settlement of Chakiler in Larnaca is nearing completion. According to Mayor Andreas Viras, the new multifunctional park will be unparalleled in Cyprus. The contractor will officially hand over the facility to the municipality in October 2025, at which point the park will finally be accessible to residents and visitors of Larnaca.
Place where sports, culture, and nature come together
The mayor explained that the park has multifunctional status thanks to its diverse infrastructure. It will feature sports fields, a cosy coffee shop, an open-air mini theatre for cultural events and specially designed walking and jogging paths.
The project began in autumn 2023 and is estimated to cost €1.7 million. The concept was developed by the architectural firm A. F. Modinos & S. A. Vrahimis Architects & Engineers.
A space for all generations
The project includes:
- the creation of a playground and an area for active recreation and sports.
- the construction of an open-air amphitheatre with a capacity of around 150 people;
- the construction of a buffet and sanitary facilities;
- the installation of new vandal-proof lighting technology;
- the placement of urban planning equipment;
- landscaping;
Underground engineering networks, including water supply and irrigation systems, sewage systems and electricity supply.
Particular attention was paid to landscaping and ecology: numerous plants were added to the area and the engineering infrastructure (water supply, sewage and power grids) was moved underground to preserve the area's beauty and ensure safety. The project was implemented with co-financing from the European Union under the THALEIA 2021–2027 programme, as well as with the support of the Government of Cyprus and the Municipality of Larnaca.
Other improvement projects
In addition, the reconstruction of Larnaca's largest green space, Pattichio Park, is ongoing. Originally planned for completion by the end of 2025, the deadline has been moved to February 2026 due to changes in the project caused by residents' protests against the excessive amount of concrete paving. The updated concept includes adjustments aimed at preserving more green spaces, as well as the construction of a new car park on Artemidos Avenue, which leads to the airport.
